How long does it take to level in WoW Classic?

Every live version of WoW Classic runs a different XP curve and pays XP at a different rate, so "how long does leveling take" has four separate answers. The table below is a full run to each version's level cap by questing, with no XP bonus active - the same numbers the calculator above produces when you leave the bonus boxes unticked.

Time to reach the level cap by questing, no XP bonus active
Version Levels Total XP Casual Average Optimized
WoW Forever 1-60 4,084,700 ~103 h ~62 h ~39 h
Classic Era 1-60 4,084,700 ~118 h ~71 h ~44 h
TBC Anniversary 1-70 10,141,700 ~90 h ~54 h ~34 h
MoP Classic 1-90 95,883,400 ~54 h ~32 h ~20 h

Casual is a first time through with no guide addon. Average is a decent route with some downtime. Optimized is a guide addon and a tight route with little time spent idle. Rested XP, heirlooms and event buffs come off the top of these numbers - see XP bonuses.

WoW Forever leveling (1-60)

WoW Forever launches on , with beta open since . Blizzard confirmed the 1-60 XP curve is unchanged from Classic, so reaching 60 is still 4,084,700 XP. What changed is where that XP comes from: dungeon mob XP is reduced and dungeon quest XP is raised, which is meant to stop dungeon spam beating questing the way it does on Classic Era realms.

Forever also adds new leveling ground. Zephras Isle covers 1-12 for the Skyborne, The Riverglades adds 150+ quests in the awkward 35-45 bracket, Desolace and the Wetlands get expanded questing, and Krol'dok Stronghold is a 40-45 outdoor dungeon. That extra content matters most in the 30s and 40s, where vanilla routes traditionally run thin.

Dungeon grinding~170 h~102 h~64 h
Mixed~99 h~59 h~37 h
PvP~294 h~176 h~110 h

Forever rates are pre-launch estimates. The XP requirements are firm because the curve is unchanged, but the XP/hour bands - the dungeon ones especially - will be revised once players report live numbers after launch.

Classic Era and Hardcore leveling (1-60)

Classic Era and Hardcore realms run the original patch 1.12 curve: 4,084,700 XP from 1 to 60, no heirlooms, no XP buffs, no shortcuts. It is the slowest 1-60 of any live version, and the back half is where the time goes. Levels 50-60 alone are 1,778,600 XP - about 44% of the entire run - while 1-10 is under 1%.

PvP~346 h~207 h~130 h

Hardcore realms use the same XP table, so the XP figures apply directly - but treat the time estimates as a floor. Playing carefully enough to survive costs hours that none of these paces account for.

TBC Anniversary leveling (1-70)

TBC Anniversary opened the Dark Portal on and runs the post-patch 2.3 curve, which cut levels 11-59 by up to about 18%. That makes 1-60 cheaper here - 3,379,400 XP - than on Classic Era, but the total to 70 is 10,141,700 XP because Outland is expensive: levels 60-70 are 6,762,300 XP, roughly 67% of the whole run.

Outland is still the fast half. Quest XP per hour from Hellfire Peninsula onward is several times what Azeroth pays, so the last ten levels take far less real time than their XP cost suggests. The usual plan is to push to 58, step through the Dark Portal, and never look back.

MoP Classic leveling (1-90)

MoP Classic is on patch 5.5.3, Siege of Orgrimmar. The Escalation patch on applied the 5.3 XP reduction, so levels 85-90 now need 64,990,000 XP instead of 97,500,000 - a third off the most expensive stretch in the game. The full 1-90 run is 95,883,400 XP, and Pandaria is still 68% of it.

MoP is also the only live version with real XP stacking: heirloom chest and shoulders for +20%, the guild perk Fast Track for +10%, and rested on top. That is why a prepared player with heirlooms lands near the commonly reported 25 hours rather than the 32 the base questing numbers show, and why 85-90 on its own comes out around 8-9 hours.

MoP is the one version where dungeon grinding beats questing outright, because Dungeon Finder removes the travel and group-forming time that makes dungeon spam expensive in Classic Era.

XP bonuses and how much they actually save

An XP bonus never changes how much XP a level costs - it changes how fast you earn it. A +20% bonus cuts roughly 17% off the time, not 20%. Which bonuses exist depends on the version, so the calculator only offers the ones that apply to your selection.

Available XP bonuses by version
Bonus Value Where it applies
Rested XP (typical play) +15% All versions
Always rested (alt or short sessions) +30% All versions
Heirloom chest + shoulders +20% MoP Classic only
Guild perk: Fast Track +10% MoP Classic only
Joyous Journeys +50% Not currently active

Rested doubles the XP you get from killing mobs while the bonus holds. The two rested options describe the same buff at different intensities, so they never stack with each other - ticking one unticks the other. Everything else adds together.

How the numbers work

Most leveling calculators divide total XP by a single XP/hour figure. That is wrong in both directions: a level 12 character and a level 58 character earn wildly different XP per hour, and the XP a level costs climbs steeply as you go. This calculator walks the table one level at a time, applying the XP/hour band that fits each level, so a 1-60 run and a 55-60 run are both estimated honestly.

XP requirements come from the Warcraft Wiki Experience to level tables and were verified on . Each version is mapped to the curve its patch actually runs: vanilla 1.12 for Classic Era and WoW Forever, post-2.3 for TBC Anniversary, post-5.3 for MoP Classic.

XP/hour rates are calibrated so a full run at each pace lands inside the completion times players report for that version. They are estimates, not measurements - your class, your route, your server's population and how much time you spend in the auction house all move the real number. Treat the output as a planning figure, not a promise.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to level 1-60 in WoW Classic Era?

Levels 1 to 60 need 4,084,700 XP on the original 1.12 curve. Questing with no XP bonus, this calculator puts a first-time casual run at roughly 118 hours, an average run at roughly 71 hours, and an optimized run with a guide addon and a tight route at roughly 44 hours.

How long will 1-60 take in WoW Forever?

The 1-60 XP curve in WoW Forever is unchanged from Classic, so it is still 4,084,700 XP. Because dungeon mob XP is cut and dungeon quest XP is raised, questing is meant to be the fastest route: roughly 103 hours casual, 62 hours average and 39 hours optimized. These are pre-launch estimates and will be revised once live data lands.

How much XP do you need to reach level 60?

4,084,700 XP in Classic Era and WoW Forever, which both use the vanilla 1.12 curve. In TBC Anniversary the post-2.3 curve cuts levels 11-59, so 1-60 is 3,379,400 XP. Levels 50-60 alone are 1,778,600 XP, about 44 percent of the whole vanilla run.

How long does 1-70 take in TBC Anniversary?

1-70 is 10,141,700 XP, and Outland from 60 to 70 is 6,762,300 of that, about 67 percent. Questing with no XP bonus lands near 90 hours casual, 54 hours average and 34 hours optimized, because Outland quest XP per hour is several times higher than Azeroth's.

How long does 1-90 take in MoP Classic?

1-90 is 95,883,400 XP, of which 64,990,000 is levels 85-90 alone. Questing with no XP bonus is roughly 54 hours casual, 32 hours average and 20 hours optimized. With heirlooms and rested a prepared player lands nearer the commonly reported 25 hours, and 85-90 on its own is about 8-9 hours.

Does rested XP make leveling faster?

Yes, but it changes how fast you earn XP, never how much a level costs. Rested doubles the XP you get from killing mobs while the bonus lasts, which works out to roughly +15 percent over a normal play session, or nearer +30 percent if you only play an alt in short sessions and log out in an inn. Pick the matching bonus checkbox and the estimate drops accordingly.

Is dungeon grinding faster than questing?

It depends on the version. In Classic Era dungeon spam is slower overall than questing, around 81 hours versus 71 at an average pace, though it is strong in specific brackets. In MoP Classic dungeons are the fastest single route at roughly 28 hours. In WoW Forever dungeon mob XP is reduced on purpose, so questing wins clearly.

Do heirlooms work in Classic Era and WoW Forever?

No. Heirlooms do not exist in Classic Era, Hardcore or WoW Forever, so the only XP bonus available there is rested. MoP Classic has heirloom chest and shoulders for +20 percent combined, plus the guild perk Fast Track for another +10 percent.

Is the Joyous Journeys XP buff still active?

Not right now. The +50 percent Joyous Journeys buff ran in MoP Classic from 21 April 2026 until Siege of Orgrimmar released in early June 2026. The checkbox is still in the calculator so you can model what happens if Blizzard turns it back on.
